Dental cleaning (scale and polish) is involved in removing plaque (soft and sticky film that is rich with bacteria) and tartar (calculus) deposits that can build overtime. Good brushing and flossing techniques can prevent these layers from forming. However, once formed, the rough surface provides an ideal medium for further deposits to attach leading to gum problems and sometimes decay. This can be removed professionally by your dentist.
So how often should you get a dental clean?
For most people, it is recommended to have this done twice a year, however, your dentist may tell you that you can come in less frequently if you are looking after your mouth well. If you are a smoker, or suffering from gum disease, or prone to getting cavities you may need to have this done more frequently.
